First pho

May 30, 2009

After a trip to Babies R Us to look for a bigger carseat, we went to a Vietnamese noodle shop for lunch.  We had to put the garnish plate out of Patrick’s reach (he really wanted to grab a slice of hot pepper), but he tried a couple of soft noodles and enjoyed eating his cereal snacks from Micah’s chopsticks.

How to Eat Like a Boy

Go Rice!

January 18, 2009

Cereal, that is.

Patrick had his first taste of real food yesterday when he tried a few spoonfuls of rice cereal.  Though suspicious at the outset (the camera in his face didn’t help), he soon decided he liked it and was eager for more bites.  He is supposed to have cereal for several days before starting the parade of fruits and vegetables.  One of our baby advice books says that first-time parents are always in a hurry to introduce solid foods, while more experienced moms and dads know it’s just a big pain and put it off as long as possible.  So I guess we’re just following the proper script!

Do I dare to eat a peach?

August 27, 2008

I guess there’s not really a good time to have gestational diabetes–and I have to admit that dealing with this kind of restricted diet during the holidays would be much worse–but it has been hard to pass up so many delicious summer fruits.  At least cakes and cookies generally don’t have much redeeming nutritional value, making it easy to see the advantages of avoiding them, but fruit, for heaven’s sake….  Anyway, I’ve given in and eaten strawberries, peaches, and grapes, but only in strict moderation.  I hope I return to good health after the baby arrives, so I can go back to enjoying the produce section.

In other news, I was back at the doctor’s office today, for my weekly check-up.  B3 put on a good show on the fetal monitor, though at first he squirmed right off the chart.  After some adjustments, he did just fine and managed not to land us in the hospital this time.  The doctor’s examination gave no indication that the little fella is in any hurry to join us in the outside world, but the plan is still to get him out on or before September 14.  Good thing, too, since “Wow, you look huge” is actually overtaking “Hot enough for you?” as the comment I hear most often.

Sweet dreams

July 16, 2008

Here’s a new theory: Dreaming about treats can raise one’s blood sugar.  Last night I dreamed I ate three pieces of pie (mmm…pie…), and this morning my glucose number was the worst it has ever been.  Argh!

Eating right continues to be a challenge, but it’s also inspiring me to try out a lot of new recipes–and even some exotic appliances (ooh, immersion blender!).  Thank goodness I saved all my old issues of “Cooking Light” (though even it can’t offer a pie recipe that I can eat at the moment).

*By the way, this is a cool thing you can try.  A lot of people who post their photos on Flickr make them available for use by others with the help of a Creative Commons license.  You can put these pictures in your own stuff, provided you abide by the restrictions they have chosen.  My usual skepticism about technological hype must yield to genuine appreciation for this innovation.
